Please let me turn my controller off without giving me the "Controller is disconnected" spam. I don't want to needlessly drain my batteries for no reason.

Hi there, yes, it is a little frustrating. Unfortunately this is unlikely to be changed anytime soon. I suggest you buy yourself a play & charge set — they only cost about £15 / $20 — it represents a good investment when you think about all the batteries you have to buy!
