So I made a hard save before the "point of no return". I did all the notes, turned them in and I had one campfire left. But, when I get there after gathering the companions. It automatically fails. Any hints or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Probably because you either did not do the "Trouble in Eden" quest or you failed it. I failed it and cannot move forward. Terrible game mechanics.
