I like to play as mage in RPGs but I dont feel comfortable with light/shadow magic anymore if I have to believe in whatever god these people believe, it rubs me the wrong way I dont know. I really hope the main character can learn native magic (edit: already saw that can not be possible). Or at least you can say in-game that you have magic but you are not a believer

edit. I read the the main character can use magic because it is related to the Malichor Plague, so maybe this means I can roleplay as atheist mage/magic user??? 😛

I wonder what was the decision process for Spiders to chose Africa as the place that's getting colonized / has the magic cure for the plague, instead of something more exotic like India.
India has interesting social structure with dynasties and castes, and various interesting religious traditions like cows walking streets and being sacred. Huge temples. Yoga. Elephant rides. Tons of stuff.
Africa has tribes living in mud huts, wearing face paint and hunting with spears. Doesn't sound that exciting so you felt the need to spice it up with imaginary stuff. And they also they have magic! and tree creatures!
Although I guess India stuff has been a little overdone with prince of persia games, Africa only had Far Cry 2 in popular game media, there's that going for that choice.

this is not africa, the setting is fictional. In any case, the game take inspiration from colonialism so natives are kinda fictional native americans.

So we know Siora is our native companion, so we have our representative from natives (she's so beautiful I cant!)

We have left sailors, scientifics, religious, and mercenaries. My question is when we can expect more info about this? 2019 is so far away! 😞

There's an old man doing light magic it seems, is he the companion from the religious faction?

I loved what I saw from E3, keep the good work! I cant wait for the game!

maybe it will be 2 straight (male and female), one gay and one lesbian. This would be only fair if every character have the same level of plot-relevance which I really doubt.

Why they should have the same plot-relevance? What do you mean by the same plot-relevance? I thought that players are mainly interested in interesting characters that somehow react to player and possibly evolve and thus these NPCs will have different backgrounds and character arcs. And each player will have different idea about who is interesting or important or why. You can hardly make "the same ideal plot relevance" for all.

@mariecécile-jacq said in On the romance options:

We're really focusing on the story and having strong and well-written characters. For reasons that will be obvious when you will discover the game, we didn't went for all bi companions.

I think you have the right approach in this case, Marie Cécile. To have 5 "well-written" companions with different backgrounds is IMHO better than to try to create 5 companions with the same importance to the story or the same power or something. For example you could create 5 soldier/mercenary/leader types with similar power but it wouldnt make the game better. To force bisexuality on every companion regardless of his/her background or personality doesnt help either imho.
Please keep in mind there are also players who are only mildly interested in romances, or doesnt care at all, or some even hate romances. And they want and will benefit from interesting companions too. Chat with companions in rover in Technomancer was pretty well-written so I have faith in you in this regard. 🙂

Being well written is important, too. What Nick meant was that in previous cases (I know you love examples so for EX: Alistair from DA: O) a character that was only available to players of certain preference just had so much more to offer the story. Whereas others (Zeveran from DA: O) had almost no major involvement in the plot after their introduction.

Keep in mind, I usually play straight so I got my happy ending with Alistair. It just wasn't fair that my ending literally had my romance option as the driving force for the resolution and others were just kinda "meh" towards the end.

You're right that they did amazing on Technomancer romance, and I think they could really do well here, too.

I just wanted to explain where the other concern comes from. You are by no means wrong by saying being well written is important. I hope for that as well.

THANK YOU this is I want I meant 🙂

@farflame I think it's very easy to understand what I mean for plot-relevance, of course not every companion is gonna be important always in the plot but I want the same level of care for everyone, and this included plot-relevance, I dont want a promiscouos bisexual elf that you can kill right away when you first meet him like in DAO, I want romances that are tie up to the main plot (Morrigan, Alistair, Solas, Cassandra for example)

It's true some people dont care about romances or hate them, but this is a old song already because you can simply avoid them and everybody is happy. Romances are not mandatory but optionals.

lgbtq people are interested in romance in rpgs because it's the only way to be a lgbtq main character in videogames, but we do care about other aspects of the game, just this is something we care the most because it let us be ourselves and being represented, because mainstream media in videogames dont give a damn about us (a few games are breaking the mold Tlou, LiS, and that's pretty much all)

We cant wait to find out the romance list and we have this fear because other games have let us down many times. I think being eager is not enough to express the feeling lol

thank you very much

also MarieCécile mentioned lesbian and gay romances so maybe it will be 2 straight (male and female), one gay and one lesbian. This would be only fair if every character have the same level of plot-relevance which I really doubt.

Anyways, I cant wait to see a gameplay or anything about the game!!!!

I hope this is not something like DAO where the plot-relevant characters (Alistair and Morrigan) were straight thus straight people having two options and lesbians/gays having only one side-character option. We'll see, if this is DAO situation I hope the plot-relevant ones are bisexual to get a lot of content.

I cant wait to know more about the game, specially companions, pretty much is the only thing that I'm intrigued about, I know too soon but gawd I'm eager to know moaar 😛

@grannyweatherwax said in Which companion's faction you want to know the most?:

I'm curious about how the scientist faction will resolve itself but I won't know which companion I'll find most interesting/romancable till I meet them.

Though if traveling with the native makes animals not hostile, so I don't have to kill any of them, they're gonna end up my constant companion 😛

the last part! YES!, I hate killing wild animals, gimme demons and monsters but killing bears, wolves, rats, DRAGONS... I hate it

@willowg said in Male Companions in Greedfall?:

I really don't get the complaint about gay romances in a tread about aestetic of male companions, it seem to me almost just a jump in to shut up any kind of request from female players that happen to be straight.

everytime lgbtq people are critical about the romances they have in these kind of games, the demonization of their opinion starts, happens in every forum and every site. I wish I could post some facepalm gif here. Sigh.

Anyway, I hope Spiders gets some good feedback from these users, Andrew was a right step in the right direction and Bless Spiders for that. Keep the good work!

Personally what I dont want is what Bioware usually does, treating lgbtq as lesser characters, I want equality content-wise, no more deviant promiscuous bi men that prefer women, no more hide your gays trope as Mass Effect likes to do, no more chivalrous characters as straight like Dragon Age likes to do, PLOT-RELEVANT characters is important too, Bioware likes to do real life gay angst but since Spiders has confirmed that this wont be a problem is all great 😃 just queer romances as full-fledged as the straight ones, I dont usually give a damn about appearance but that's a sweet bonus.

Technomancer was a step in the right direction with Andrew and it was great as first step. Will see how Spiders treats the romance part in this game, I hope everyone is happy and after being disappointed by Bioware over and over again I prefer all bisexual approach (as long as the conversations are not gender neutral, that's important for the immersion)

What on earth does this have to do with how male companions look?

And all bioware bi males are different. Zevran is the only promiscuous one. Fenris is grumpy emo, Anders is a true romantic and a core of the plot, and Iron Bull is a gigantic warrior. Reyes is a rogue who is not particularly promiscuous, and Jaal is straight out of Regency romance. Can't see how's Andrew particularly stands out?

lgbtq players had to fight for Kaidan and Jaal to happen, so they dont count. Zevran and Iron Bull are all promiscuous and deviant. Iron Bull is my favorite m/m romance, but they are both assasin/spy, they can betray you so they are deviant bi trope characters. I dont cound DA2 because of the all bi approach, but both of the characters have their baggage and love Anders and my characters are pro-mages but he killed a bunch of people (and he was promiscous in DA:A)

Gil and Steve are hidden gays in the hold with real gay angst like Dorian (therapy conversion). Kaidan and Jaal we had to fight for them. And Reyes is another bi promiscous with hidden intentions.

I'm just expressing myself out how I want my male romance options, I dont know why are you bothered that much?

I just don't see the relevance o the romance availability to the avatars in a game to the request for at least one male companion who looks hot. Your views on lbgtq romances are way too complicated, and incredibly burdened with multiple conditions that have nothing to do with the games themselves, but with some sort of a conflict of a man vs Industry. You have an axe to grind with Bio, that's probably not the place anyway. Spiders have not even done a bi romance to start with, or at least in the two I played. Ye gods, just because Reyes had a girlfriend before it does not make his promiscuous.

I just want a simple thing: a great looking, hot, awesome, incredible male companion in a Spider's game that can look as great and immediately eye-catching as Niesha, Amelia, Sybil ad Edwina, aka the female characters. Whom that companion romances and if he romances anyone at all, is something that is more secondary, but I certainly way prefer open romances, not gated.

If you do want the males to look younger and hotter than they are in the previous games, well, say so, it's not really some sort of a bad thing, or embarrassing one or whatever. If you can't care less, well, that's fine too. If you are vehemently opposed, well, tell me why...

I'm just telling what I want, that's because I started with "Personally" and doing a comparison with Bioware is only logical because Spiders and BIoware are the only two vg developers that make cinematic gay scenes. My ideas are not complicated and way too much discussed by a lot of gaymers. If you think I think that Reyes is promiscuous because he had a girlfriend you are so wrong lol is the way the character is written and how sexually flirtatious he is. Again, if my views about lgbtq upsets you, dont read them. I'm not going to censore myself and not telling what I want. And even better, dont you dare to think what's better for gay/bi men players.

It's totally ok you want a hot male companion, like I said it's a great bonus. Myself? I just want fair content because I'm so used to scraps that I dont care anymore if he is conventionally hot or not. I think I have left my point clear so this will be my last comment about this.

it's ok pal

I'm totally on board for animal companions, I totally despise killing wild animals like wolves, bears etc in games, so it would be a nice change.

I dont like to use horses (Skyrim for example) in games, I like to walk with my feet!

"is there a reason why everyone is straight or wants straight things?" not to be rude but that question is not very likeable.

rpgs are the only games where lgbtq can be themselves versus how heteronormative videogame industry is, so it's very normal to see lgbtq people asking these questions.

I'm interested in native faction and I would like a male native LI for my gay character. But I'm always a magic user so I'm definitely looking forward the religious faction even though my characters are always atheists and what light magic means. It's kinda sad that we are not going to use native nature magic but it's understandable lore wise.
