I've noticed the bolters are way more effective when your ping is low for obvious reasons. If you your ping in 100ms, the server can update your character 10 times a second, so if your bolter is firing less than 10 rounds a second the server is going to register those hits more effectively than if your firing rate was higher than 10 rounds a second. Really it should be under 100ms as your are moving, using perks etc. Try it. Connect to a cambodian dial up server with ??? in the ping meter and then connect to one thats green with less than 100 ms ping time. You'll see the difference. Goes with all the weapons really. The higher the ping the greater the chance your shots aren't being registered by the server.
There also perks and mods which help you. In fact for some classes you can be totally immune to critical hits. Also you can block them. It always the scythe strains that do it. But they always decloak before hitting you, if you fast enough hit the right CTRL button to block and voila not more one shot. Also if they take fire they decloak and generally you can block or side step their attacks without too much trouble. They also take way less damage than the other nids so they are easy to kill. Just practice on easy getting purposely attacked by the scythe strains practicing the block and you'll almost never get one shotted. I've been playing since the game first came out last year and I can't remember the last time I got one shotted even on no mercy.
Ok I did some more testing on a server the ping so high it had red ??? on it. WTF is that? Cambodian dial up? They spoke English so the farthest they are is in the UK. Guys this is a multiplayer game please pay more than 50 cents for internet so you can at least get 1200 baud Commodore 64 modem speed. I pay the cheapest plan, $10 a month for multiple megabit, with multiple computers and a mining farm and I get sub 100 ping times and to Europe I get max 150. Anyway they still mostly worked, there were a few times it was weird as you can imagine, put it this way I only got through a level before it said "network disconnected". If things got a little weird the thing to do is hold down the fire button like you're doing a power attack and they work fine. I went back to a normal 100 ish ping server and they worked perfectly again. So here are some tips with the claws which seem a little more finicky about the ping times than the other weapons.
- Try and get decent internet. Please. Go to google and type in "speed test" and see what kind of ping times and speed you're getting from various cities around N.America and europe. Try a New york server, Try Los Angeles or Seattle and see if you're getting crazy fluctuations or crappy ping times. Maybe that dollar store internet plan might not be worth it. And turn off bit torrent and don't be downloading porn while you're trying to play it screws up the rest of us.
- If you are on shit internet, and you want to use the claws, then Host don't be the client, that way there is no latency.
- If you are the client try and pick the LOWEST ping times, they are colour coded so if it's green you're good to go. That goes without saying for any class as your play experience will be better.
But I'm really glad they fixed the claws. Or maybe with the advent of the ping indicator maybe just picking an appropriate server with low ping times was the key. And some people have crazy good internet. I've seen ping times as low as 50 out there, that was my original test with the claws and wow those broodlords don't stand a chance. However I would like to see the block actually block some of the incoming fire from the hybrids. For example I sat in front of a hybrid with a stubber just blocking and I could see hits all around my torso and head but the block animation is you having the claws up in front of your face and torso and was taking damage. Or if not block all the shots the damage should be heavily nerfed. I know it's no storm shield but heavy adamantium gauntlets with force field powered claws on the end should block at least something.
I actually got the lightning claws to work on a low ping server. Not once did I have the "Oh I heard the sound but my arms don't work." Not once. And this is with the lightning claw perk as well, which is kind of OP, but with the exploding plasma enemies I guess it evens out. I found the claws are best used as a backup to the point man. The point man is there to take out as many enemies as he can and target the exploding nids. The claw guy is there to back him up and make sure he doesn't get overwhelmed by nids when reloading or targeting multiple nids. You can't lose with that strategy. And for broodlords with the claw perks and mods, it's like 5 or 6 swipes and they are gone. I will try and test it on a high ping server to see if the "hi my arms don't work" is a product of ping times which was my original theory. I also like the frenzy mod with these things. I get a laugh when frenzy cools down it says "Critical Frenzy cooldown engaged + Report sent" like "Oh no brother Billy went jihad again! We'd better log this in case he turns to Chaos. That crazy Billy!" Lol. With Frenzy on and the speed and armour piercing perks it's like you're Bruce Lee with how fast you punch and take out Broodlords
Hell I've even seen Librarians with no claw perks go through hordes of enemies with those things using his psykic powers to kill the exploding nids..Good job and I don't even like playing melee.
In the closed beta we used to do NO Mercy all bolter runs and yes it was hard as hell but it's doable with them all modded out. The bolters are more of a support type weapon to take out the sniping hybrids or far away turrets and the like. For example if you get the tactical perk "strategist" which gives you armour piercing AND 30% faster powerfist punches, it's almost OP. Even if you don't kill them with the bolter you just punch them out. Or what I like to do if I'm mixing it up with multiple nids close up is punch, fire a burst to disrupt the nids attack then punch again to take them out. It's crazy, I can take on like 5 nids myself and barely have them get a shot in because I'm using the bolter to disrupt their attack or finish them off.
The bolters are really used for precise bolter fire on high value targets like psykers, heavy stubbers, snipers, etc. Or to soften up a bunch of long range enemies. It's not really meant to mow down enemies that's where the heavy's come in. The other weapons like the spear of caliban and redemption, etc. are more point defense weapons where they can put out alot of fire and damage quickly but are not suitable for sustained fire. It's really how you use the weapon will determine it's effectiveness.
With the war machine perk and the fast recharge it's basically a spam cannon. What I would suggest is make the war machine perk only good for mag fed weapons, ie, redemption, the assault cannons, etc. That way they can still have fast recharge but it's not a super spam cannon like it is. Maybe change the "war machine" perk to "Quick change magazines. All magazine based weapons reload at double the speed". That way they can still get the fast recharge but it's not firing at the same speed as the hellfire. It would take a minimal effort and is the easiest fix. Would also affect the spear of caliban.
Normally I wouldn't care but if someone is just buying the game and hitting the "Quick game" or whatever chances are they are going to be thrown into an AFK server whereby someone just leaves it on and they just die and get some xp and just leave it for days to level up. Not only is it cheesy but new players will be WTF? Also it creates overhead for the matchmaking servers for no reason. The easiest fix is at the end where you vote to restart or continue, if there are no votes the server stops and kicks you back to the main menu. There solved...You'd think people would want renown the legit way or do single player to farm renown. This morning literally every server was "Renown farming/zzzzzz" Or "Not a Game/AFK", "Renown mine/AFK". Cmon guys, save the cheese for your sandwich.
